This year, Barnert Temple honored our Director of Lifelong Learning, Sara Losch, and celebrated the 25th anniversary of our preschool at our annual gala, The Big Event.  Barnert also launched the Kathie Williams Lifelong Learning Fund in honor of our beloved member, past president and chair of Lifelong Learning.

Mitzvah Mall 2014 (Jan. 2014)

This was our most inclusive Mitzvah Mall yet.  This unique social justice event raises awareness and funds for 11 charitable organizations.  Each organization was picked based on input from various groups at Barnert.  People of all generations came together on Jan. 26 to learn and give.

Thanksgivukah was a once in a lifetime event.  This was reason for a very special Shabbat gathering, too!  We sang, we lit candles, we prayed and we ate as we packed the room with our wonderful community members.

It's a Wizard of Oz Purim 2013

It just gets better and better each year!  We kicked off the morning's festivities with an Emerald City breakfast.  Then, in true Barnert fashion, we read the Megillah as only Barnert Temple can, followed by our Wizard of Oz Purim shpiel.  Kudos to all of our actors and musicians and the junior choir for a great show.

The Men's Club hosted another fabulous and classy evening of good wine, good food and good company.  This year, the event was held at Barnert which allowed more members to attend.  Do you think people enjoyed themselves?  The pictures tell it all!

Pancake Breakfast & Mitzvah Mall 2013 - Coming Together to Help Victims of Sandy

Once again, the Men's Club and Mitzvah Mall committee joined forces for a spectacular day of helping others.  We had a great multi-generational turnout.  Attendees had a great breakfast and then learned about a variety of charities, all with the common focus of helping victims of Hurricane Sandy.

2013 Interfaith Chanukah Celebration  

Interfaith Chanukah Celebration 2012

Our Barnert community came together and filled the Social Hall with the special warmth and energy that is Chanukah!  Once again, our Interfaith Group sponsored and coordinated the evening's festivities.  This year's celebration was accented by a fantastic klezmer band that had all ages on their feet!  We ate, we danced, we celebrated the lights of Chanukah in true Barnert style!

There's no celebration like Simchat Torah!  We rejoice as we finish reading the torah and begin a new cycle.  See our beautiful torah opened up and wrapping around our sanctuary, help up by members of all ages!  Watch our members sing and dance and celebrate as one community!  Welcome to Simchat Torah!

 2012 Religious School Awards 

2012 Religious School Awards

Each year, we recognize and honor our Religious School students who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to their Jewish studies at Barnert.  The highest honor awarded is the Chai Achievement Award, awarded for overall excellence in the three pillars of Judaism: Torah, Avodah, Gemilut Chasadim, as well having excellent attendance in class and at monthly Shabbat.

2012 Comedy with A Cause Gala Event

It made us laugh.  It brought hundreds of people together.  It was this year's Comedy with A Cause Gala Event to support Barnert Temple and Paterson Habitat for Humanity.

 Geniza 2012 Photo 

Creating a Geniza at Mt. Nebo

In April 2012, Rabbi Rachel Steiner and members of our community established a geniza, a burial site for sacred objects, at Barnert's Mt. Nebo cemetery.  At this special gatherings, members brought their sacred objects - old prayer books, tallit, etc. - and gave them a proper resting place.

It brought out congregants of all ages and generated lots of laughter.  This year's Purim Shpiel cast performed for a packed house!  Kudos to all of our actors and musicians for a great show.

BarTY (Barnert Temple Youth) Raise Funds to End Homelessness in NJ

BarTY hosted a chocolate tasting event to raise funds for the NJ Coalition to End Homelessness.  This spectacular event drew approximately 100 people and raised over $4,000 for the NJ Coalition to End Homelessness!  Hats off to your wonderful youth group for organizing such a successful event.  Click here to learn more about the NJ Coalition to End Homelessness and what you can do to help.

One Book, One Community Slideshow Thumbnail 

"One Book, One Community" Brings the Generations Together

Barnert Temple participated in New Jersey's largest book group by hosting a One Book, One Community event . This exciting, new, collaborative program is designed to enhance Jewish learning and encourage participation throughout northern New Jersey - when we all read one book together!  We joined forces with our Renaissance Group (members 55 and older) for a spiritually renewing Havdallah service followed by a dynamic discussion about "My Father's Paradise - A Son's Search for His Family's Past."
